Abstract

In this mostly expository talk, I will give a brief overview of o-minimality and some of its connections to optimization and deep learning. The goal is to explain the geometric ingredients behind the convergence guarantees for the stochastic subgradient method established by Davis, Drusvyatskiy, Kakade, and Lee. In particular, I will discuss the geometry of Clarke subgradients following Bolte, Daniilidis, Lewis, and Shiota, and the conservative set-valued fields introduced by Bolte and Pauwels, including their role in nonsmooth automatic differentiation.

The talk is based on our survey, *Deep Learning as the Disciplined Construction of Tame Objects* (https://arxiv.org/abs/2509.18025), joint work with Gilles Bareilles, Johannes Aspman, Jana Lepšová, and Jakub Mareček. Time permitting, I will discuss whether these geometric ingredients persist beyond o-minimality, under weaker assumptions on expansions of the real field such as d-minimality, (strong) noiselessness, and nondefinability of ℕ.
