Title: Numerical index theory

Abstract

The concept of numerical index was introduced by Lumer in 1968 in the context of the study

and classification of operator algebras. This is a constant that relates the usual norm to the

numerical range of bounded linear operators on the space, and describes the geometry of the

space L(X) around the identity. With the purpose of describing in a similar way the geometry

of the space of all bounded linear operators between two possibly different Banach spaces X

and Y , Ardalani extended these concepts in 2014 considering operators in L(X, Y ), and fixing

an arbitrary norm-one operator instead of the identity.

In this talk, we will give an overview of the topic, analysing differences and similarities

between these concepts, and presenting some classical and recent results in the area.

Some of the results that will be presented are joint work with V. Kadets, M. Mart´ın, J. Mer´ı,

and A. P´erez.
